The pair have formed a solid central midfield partnership in Newcastle United's opening three fixtures, and go into tomorrow's game against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium full of confidence.

Butt was a role model for Guthrie when he was a youth team player at Manchester United.

And the 22-year-old – who was released by the Old Trafford club at the age of 16 – is relishing playing alongside the experienced campaigner at Newcastle.

Guthrie – who scored twice for his new club in pre-season – says Butt is taking the lead defensively, allowing him to get forward and link up with the front men.

"We're building an understanding," Guthrie told the Gazette.

"Nicky's tending to sit a little bit more, and letting me go forward.

"If he does go forward, I'm able to sit. I think we're working well together.

"I'm really enjoying it. Everyone's always happy if they're playing, and I just want to maintain my performance levels."

United's midfield normally have their hands full at the Emirates Stadium, and Guthrie and Butt will have to be on their mettle.

However, as Newcastle showed at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the season when they took a point from Man United, they are capable of playing the top four at their own game.

Guthrie added: "Arsenal will be a tough game, but we'll be ready for it.

"We're confident. We're three games unbeaten now. We've made a good start, and we want to maintain and build on that.

"Hopefully, the way Arsenal play will suit us. We want to play football.

"Obviously, the Bolton game was a physical one, and we had to match them physically.

"When we play against teams such as the top four, maybe it will be better for us, as they try and play football, and that's what we want to do."
