SUNDERLAND Former Players' Association are staging a second golf tournament – after the success of the Ian Porterfield Golf Challenge.
Former footballers from the North East's five league clubs, plus Carlisle United, will compete in the Cock of the North Golf Tournament – again at Ramside – next Friday, May 30.

Middlesbrough narrowly triumphed in last year's event, and their team
features Gary Pallister, John Hendrie and Craig Hignett.

Sunderland's definite starters are Jimmy Montgomery, Dick Malone and John MacPhail, while Jim Pearson, Kevin Scott, David Craig and David Barton will compete for Newcastle.

Hartlepool's four-man team includes ex-Sunderland men Nick Sharkey, Len Ashurst and George Herd, while former Roker hero Bryan "Pop" Robson will turn out for Carlisle.

The first players tee off at 10.30 next Friday.

The Northumbria Police team, featuring former Sunderland star Gordon Armstrong, won the QC Leisure trophy in the Ian Porterfield event, beating 19 other teams.

There were six nearest the pin prizes.

Chairman Niall Quinn took the award on the 15th hole, while Stuart Halom (son of 1973 legend Vic) had the best shot at the seventh and Ricardo Gabbiadini (brother of Marco and himself, briefly, a Sunderland player) came closest at the ninth.
