NEWCASTLE United failed in a deadline day bid for Birmingham City's James McFadden.
The club made a late move for the foward, who United's technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere had watched against Norwich City on Saturday.

However, the St Andrew's club would not budge on their £10m valuation of 25-year-old McFadden, and the move fell by the wayside on a dramatic day for English football.

Executive director (football) Dennis Wise was not prepared to meet that figure.

Manager Kevin Keegan will now have to wait until January's transfer window to find a replacement for James Milner, who late last week joined Aston Villa in a £12m deal.
