DANNY Guthrie has not given up hope of breaking into the England Under-21 set-up – but the Newcastle United midfielder says he will always put club before country.
Guthrie is close to an Under-21 call-up, having been watched by coach Stuart Pearce this season.

Pearce's side take on Wales at Ninian Park tonight in the first leg of their European Championship play-off, with the return at Villa Park four days later.

And should England progress to the prestigious finals in Sweden next summer, Guthrie – who returned from a three-game suspension to play his part in Sunday's 2-2 draw away to Everton – knows he will only be an injury or two away from an international call-up.

"I've not played for the Under-21s, but hopefully I'll get a call," Guthrie told the Gazette.

"Like any young player, I want to get into the squad, and if I can maintain my performance levels for Newcastle, then I might get a chance.

"It is an aim, but I'm not too worried about it at the moment. If Stuart Pearce picks me, he picks me, but if not I'll just concentrate on playing for Newcastle.

"Newcastle's the most important thing for me. I want to play for the team here more than anything, and if I get picked for the Under-21s that'll be an added bonus."

Pearce watched Guthrie – signed from Liverpool in the summer after a season on loan at Bolton Wanderers – against Coventry City in the Carling Cup.

He said at the time: "I'm having a good look at Danny Guthrie. We watched him at Bolton Wanderers last season, and part of my job here is to have another look at him."

Newcastle youngster Steven Taylor will skipper the Under-21s tonight, while there will also be a place for his former team-mate James Milner.
