NEWCASTLE United were put on alert today after Reading made defender Nicky Shorey available for transfer.
Kevin Keegan revealed to the Gazette on April 22 that he wanted to sign another left-back this summer to provide competition for Jose Enrique.
And England international Shorey would fit the bill, after being told he can leave Reading following their relegation from the Premier League.
Royals' chief executive Nigel Howe said: "Nicky Shorey and a few others will be looked at as potential people to leave.
"Nicky has made it clear for a long time that he hasn't been too happy at the club. Well, let's hope that somebody comes in with a good offer."
West Ham, however, are thought to be in pole position to sign the left-back, having had an approach in January turned down by Reading.
Liverpool's John Arne Riise, who is expected to leave Anfield this summer, is also a possible target for Keegan.
