CARING Angela Oxberry remembers how pleased she was when she was offered a job at Women's Health in South Tyneside (Whist).

She has been project co-ordinator for 19 years – and her dedication has not gone unnoticed.

Sheila Brown, who attended a confidence-building course at the centre in Mile End Road, South Shields, has nominated her for Role Model of the Year in the Pride of South Tyneside Awards.

Ms Oxberry was her tutor and supported her.

"Angela has helped countless women in crisis situations over the years," she said.

"She works tirelessly, raising funds for staff posts and providing services for women in South Tyneside.

"Angela is a strong leader. She is very supportive and encouraging to staff members, always insisting that Whist's success is a team effort.

"Her strength, caring and dedication has produced a community spirit that is noticeable to everyone who visits the project.

"She is an inspiration to women and has developed a project the people of South Tyneside can be proud of."

Ms Oxberry said she was proud to be nominated for the award.

"I enjoy my work and I still remember how pleased I was to be offered the job, even though it was years ago," she said.

"I do work hard to try to secure Whist and help it to be successful.

"I believe that women should have choices and chances in their life.

"They should be encouraged and have their achievements acknowledged.

"There is an impressive commitment among the working team, offering services and support from Whist.

"These women are involved with, and responsible for, shaping and delivering the services, and they make attending Whist such a positive experience."

* The Pride of South Tyneside Awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.

Ten awards are up for grabs – Carer of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Greener South Tyneside, Sporting Excellence, Top Achiever, Child of Courage, Good Friend/Neighbour, Role Model of the Year, Young Performer(s) of the Year and a Judges' Special Award.

The closing date has now passed for nominations.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Customs House on Thursday, July 10.
