CARING Aileen McLoughlin is a one-woman Neighbourhood Watch!
The 65-year-old grandmother, from Ashbourne Road, Hill Park, Jarrow, is well-known in the street for her helping hands.

Grateful Andrew Buddin, 43, has nominated her for Good Friend/Neighbour in the Pride of South Tyneside Awards.

He and wife Lynne, 43, have lived in the street for 18 years, and during that time, caring Aileen has dished up Sunday dinners for her neighbours and looked after those who have been ill.

He added: "Aileen always keeps an eye on our house when we are away.

"We don't have an official Neighbourhood Watch - we have an unofficial version in the form of Aileen!

"She also keeps an eye out for the postman and deliveries for us, as we work full time.

"Aileen is a good friend, a good neighbour and someone you can talk to and will listen. She is always there for her neighbours.

"Neighbours like this are hard to come by, and I would just like to say a big 'thank you' to her from all of us."

Mrs McLoughlin, who is married to Peter, 64, and has three daughters and five grandchildren, has lived on the estate more than 40 years, and in the street for more than 30.

The retired shop assistant and office clerk said: "I don't look for awards. I do it because I feel I am able to do it.

"It's very nice to think you are appreciated so much, but Andrew and Lynne are a lovely couple too."

* The Pride of South Tyneside Awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.

Ten awards are up for grabs – Carer of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Greener South Tyneside, Sporting Excellence, Top Achiever, Child of Courage, Good Friend/Neighbour, Role Model of the Year, Young Performer(s) of the Year and a Judges' Special Award.

The closing date has now passed for nominations.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Customs House on Thursday, July 10.
