CARING Margaret Brown has dedicated 15 years of her life to helping young people in South Tyneside.
The 57-year-old has led the Badger group at St John Ambulance, in South Shields, for 13 years, and was assistant leader for a couple of years before that.
She was roped into helping out when her daughter Trudy, now 22, was a member of the group.
As a reward for her hard work, Christine Spencer has nominated her for Role Model of the Year in the Pride of South Tyneside Awards.
She said: "Margaret is an absolute star with the children. They all look up to her and enjoy every session.
"The Badgers all enjoy trips and activities away from their base, the Londonderry Hall, on a regular basis, which Margaret attends all the time.
"Margaret not only does the Badgers, but also cares full-time for Trudy, who has special needs.
"My oldest son, Andrew, was a super Badger when he was younger and my youngest son Phillip is currently a Badger – both of them enjoying their time with St John Ambulance."
Mrs Brown, from Hepscott Terrace, South Shields, has 25 children, aged between five and 11, in her charge at the moment.
She said: "I keep thinking I am going to pack in, but then one of them will say something and I remember why I am there. They are a great bunch of kids."
The group is not fully based on first aid, said Mrs Brown, also mum to Zoe, 26.
There are nine different awards the children can work towards, including an eco-badge, entertainment and the learning of St John.
* The Pride of South Tyneside Awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.
Ten awards are up for grabs – Carer of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Greener South Tyneside, Sporting Excellence, Top Achiever, Child of Courage, Good Friend/Neighbour, Role Model of the Year, Young Performer(s) of the Year and a Judges' Special Award.
The closing date for nominations has now passed.
Up to 16 Young Performer(s) nominees will get to strut their stuff on stage in a talent show at the Customs House on Wednesday, April 23.
The awards ceremony will take place at the arts venue on Thursday, July 10.
