THE Pride of South Tyneside Awards have been running for six years – but the job of choosing the winners doesn't get any easier.
This year has been the biggest yet, with a record number of entries.

More than 100 nominations were received in nine categories, the most popular being Young Performer(s) of the Year and Role Model of the Year, with more than 20 entries each.

The panel of judges, chaired by Gazette editor John Szymanski, also had the difficult task of choosing a Judges' Special Award recipient.

Mr Szymanski said: "We had a fantastic selection of entries this year, which once again showed what a fantastic place South Tyneside really is.

"As in previous years, the judges found it extremely hard to separate them.

"I am looking forward to a superb showcase this year and it seems that the Pride of South Tyneside Awards just seem to get better and better."

The awards are organised by the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Customs House.

The Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Alex Donaldson, was involved in the judging process for the first time this year.

He said: "It is nice being a judge for these things and I am always very impressed by the quality of everyone who takes part.

"They made it very difficult to pick the winners out, but it was a very open process and everyone got the chance to speak.

"I am impressed all the time by the talent we have got in South Tyneside and I hope some of them go on to become famous."

Other judges included Geoff Ford, chairman of sponsors Ford Components, Susan Carru-thers, from sponsors South Tyne-side Council for Voluntary Services, and Tim Harris, the then chief executive of sponsors South Tyneside Homes.

Executive director Ray Spencer and operations director Peter Darrant represented the Customs House.

Pat Folland, who is involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in South Tyneside, and Lalon Amin, secretary of Bangladeshi community group Bangla Awaz, were invited on to the panel as community representatives.

* The Pride of South Tyneside Awards take place at the Customs House on Thursday, when we will also be revealing the shortlisted nominees in the Gazette.
