SUNDERLAND dropped into the Premier League's bottom three on a miserable afternoon at the Stadium of Light.
Roy Keane's side started well in his 100th game as manager, and took a lead through Djibril Cisse after just 11 minutes.
But Bolton equalised via Matthew Taylor's header, and then went in front through Gary Cahill's low drive.
Woeful defending then let in Johan Elmander to make it 3-1, and he hit another in the second half to condemn the Black Cats to their fifth defeat in six league games.
Many home supporters left before the end, and boos rang out around the stadium at the final whistle.
Bolton moved up to seventh following their fourth win in five Premier League matches.
