DARREN Ward is hoping to get his season underway tonight against former club Nottingham Forest.
Sunderland face Colin Calderwood's Championship newcomers in a Carling Cup tie at the City Ground this evening, and the 34-year-old is hoping he will get the nod to start the game.

He told the Gazette: "I played against Nottingham Forest in the pre-season game, and it would be great if I could get a chance to be involved in the League Cup, just like I was last year.

"Obviously, my job this year is to try to push Craig Gordon as much as I can for the No 1 shirt, but clubs often make one or two changes for cup competitions, and it would be nice if I could be one of them."

Ward would be particularly pleased to be given a chance to play in a competitive game against his former club.

He added: "I was at Forest for three years between 2001-2004, and I really enjoyed my time there.

"I was part of a very decent Forest team. They had players like Eoin Jess, Des Walker, Michael Dawson and Marlon Harewood.

"I enjoyed my time there, and it was great that the Forest fans gave me such a warm welcome in the pre-season game."

Ward played well over 100 games for Forest, but none of those will come into his reckoning if he's handed the goalkeeper's gloves tonight.

The veteran keeper is still out to show that he's worthy of a Premier League place should loss of form or injury befall Gordon, and he is determined to show on the training ground and in games that he remains a genuine alternative to the Scotland No 1.

Ward said: "I've had a couple of great seasons at Sunderland.

"I loved being a regular in the side that won the Championship, and it was great to be part of a Premiership squad last season.

"I really enjoyed playing in Premiership games last season, and I'm looking to push Craig all the way in the current one.

"Obviously he's going to be No 1 for the moment. But all I can do is show that, if anything happens to him, I can step up and do a good job.

"When you're in this position you've just got to make the most of every opportunity you have to impress.

"And, personally, it would be nice if I could get the chance to do that against Forest."
