POLICE chiefs today called on Gazette readers to help catch the football thugs who blighted derby day.
Yobs set off fireworks and hurled missiles at police during last months Sunderland and Newcastle clash at the Stadium of Light.

Some fans invaded the pitch, and Newcastle United's Joey Barton was pelted with bottles and coins after he taunted Black Cats fans by kissing the badge on his football shirt.

Police have now released images of 40 fans caught on camera both inside and outside of the stadium, as part of their huge investigation into the trouble.

And today they are asking Gazette readers to help name and shame them.

A total of 29 people were arrested on the day of the match – Saturday, October 25 – and have already had action taken against them.

As a result of post-match inquiries, more hooligans have been traced and arrested, and officers have trawled through CCTV footage and photographs of the trouble, to track down the ringleaders.

Chief Superintendent Neil Mackay, of Northumbria Police Operations Unit, said: "The overwhelming majority of football fans are well behaved and want nothing more than to attend games free from the fear of violence, disorder or other crime.

"Anti-social behaviour should not be tolerated and, by working alongside us, fans can help us to prevent those responsible from attending matches.

"We will act on any information we receive from the public to ensure that those involved in disorder are identified, put through the courts and receive appropriate penalties and banning orders.

"I would appeal for the assistance of the public to identify those involved and send out a strong message that this sort of behaviour at a football match is unacceptable.

"Those attending football matches to cause disorder are attending for entirely the wrong reasons. True fans, whose first priority is the game itself, should continue to work with us to make football a safe and secure event for all concerned."

Anyone who may know the identity of any person involved, or who has any information, is urged to phone 03456 043043, or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with any information and you may get a cash reward.
