There's always someone worse off...

IF you're feeling a little sorry for yourself at the minute (and let's face it, it's hard not to), then maybe you should take a look at tonight's opponents.

It's like my nana says – 'there's always someone worse of than you'.

I don't mean to sound condescending to Portsmouth fans, but there's one thing for sure, as bad as things are for us right now, I wouldn't want to swap places.

I can't say the South East coast club is one that I have ever had a soft spot for, but by the same token, I have never felt any animosity towards it either.

However, soft spot or not, you can't help but sympathise with what their fans are going through at the minute.

It just seems to be one body blow after another, and I'm sure even the most die-hard and optimistic of Pompey fans are struggling to see how, and when, things will improve.

Of course, we can't really afford to let their plight enter into our thinking this evening.

We are just as desperate for the points as they are, and that is why we have to be looking to put them to the sword.

Yes, that's easier said than done, and given our away record you wouldn't bet on us to come up smelling of roses at the end of tonight.

But even taking our dreadful form on the road into account, we still have to go for it this evening.

There is no doubt that we are struggling for that little bit of quality and confidence to see us home in games at the moment.

However, surely the confidence of tonight's opponents must be at rock bottom.

So, perhaps we shouldn't be expecting a classic. But I have to be honest and say that I don't really care what the football is like on the field at the minute, as long as we get the result.

I couldn't give a monkey's if we win scrappy, win ugly or win lucky – just as long as we win.

Three points would be a massive shot in the arm for both the fans and the players, and it may just give us enough confidence to start playing like we believe in ourselves.

And you never know, it might be enough to appease those who are calling from Bruce's head (although thankfully at the minute, that small minority seems to be restricted to a number of clowns on the internet).

Rome wasn't built in a day, as they say, and given the money we spent in the summer, it's hard not to be despondent at our current form.

But this is the same squad, the same backroom staff and the same manager that had us playing so well at the start of the season, and had some wishfully thinking of Europe.

It's hard at the minute, there's no denying that, and it's not pretty to watch, but we have to keep the faith that Bruce and his side can turn it around.
