SCHOOLCHILDREN have given a helping hand to a South Shields community group.

Biddick Hall Focus Group approached Biddick Hall Junior School and asked if some of the pupils would help them out by creating a banner.

The focus group is setting up a stall at the opening parade for the South Tyneside festival on Saturday, where residents can find out more about the work they do, and to raise any concerns.

They wanted an inspiring banner which fits the theme "Just imagine ... a deep sea paradise".

Michelle Collinson, deputy head at the Chesterton Road school, said the pupils were happy to help.

She said: "Margaret Branch from the Biddick Hall Focus Group got in touch to ask if any of our pupils would like to get creative and help design and make the banner.

"We thought it was a great idea, and because the school is right in the middle of Biddick Hall, it was really appropriate. We were happy to help."

Classroom assistant Christine Dixon worked with six Year 6 children to come up with ideas, before they were brought to life using a variety of different materials.

She added: "I'm sure the children involved will be down there on Saturday to see their banner on display."

Margaret Branch, secretary of Biddick Hall Focus Group, said: "I'd like to thank the children for helping out, and the school for agreeing to our request.

"They've really used their imaginations and created a fantastic banner, which we'll be proud to display on our stall in Bents Park.

"We'll be having a tombola and a fantastic raffle. Shops and other businesses in the town centre have been fantastically generous with what they've donated.

Back in March, the focus group organised a community health event for women living in the area.

They also tirelessly campaigned for a new health centre in Biddick Hall, complaining that many residents have to rely on up to two different buses just to see their GP.
