THE development of two borough schools has been rubber-stamped by councillors.

A meeting of the Cabinet gave the go-ahead for St Wilfrid's RC College, in South Shields, and St Joseph's RC Comprehensive School, in Hebburn, to begin the design and building stages of their redevelopment.

The plans are part of the South Tyneside and Gateshead (Stag) Building Schools for the Future development throughout the two boroughs.

Stag has also scooped an award for Best Community Integration in the first Excellence in BSF Awards.

The Stag BSF team was presented with the award at a ceremony in London on Wednesday, hosted by the comedian Rob Brydon.

Coun Jim Foreman, lead member for children and young people, said: "We are delighted that Stag has been recognised as a model for community cohesion and partnership working.

"The involvement of our communities in the development of new schools is central to our vision for world-class education for South Tyneside's young people."
