Wet weather fails to put dampener on summer

OUTDOOR entertainment has been a huge success in South Tyneside this summer – despite the wet weather.
Figures show more people than ever before turned out to see this year's Summer Festival, even though it's been reported to be the wettest August ever.
The festival line-up has included the traditional Cookson Parade, live music at the Amphitheatre in Sea Road, South Shields, and Sunday concerts in Bents Park.
More than 17,500 people came along to see the Pop Spectacular, and 15,000 watched Scottish songstress Lulu.
The Tourist Information Centre on the seafront has also been recording higher numbers of visitors than last year.
Plus, the new play area in South Marine Park proved to be extremely popular during the school holidays and the weekends leading up to them.
In light of the recent credit crunch, people are being encouraged to take advantage of the free and low-cost attractions.
Coun Tracey Dixon, lead member for culture and well-being, said: "Residents don't have to travel abroad to have fun over the holidays, as there is so much on our doorstep.
"It needn't cost a fortune either. South Tyneside has a whole host of free activities, attractions and entertainment on offer such as the Summer Festival, Arbeia Roman Fort, South Shields Museum, our beautiful beaches and great coastal walks."
She added: "The sightseeing bus is also a great way to get around and find out about our fascinating history. It has on-board commentary and makes 12 stops.
"Families can spend the whole day hopping on and off the bus, with a family day ticket costing only £8."
