ATHLETES from Jarrow and Hebburn AC and South Shields Harriers go for medals in the North Eastern Track and Field Championships over the weekend.
Shields coach Jared Deacon, rapidly building up a national reputation, will be expecting a large tally of trophies from his charges at the Gateshead Indoor Arena.
Jack Moore and Greg Ritchie will be confident of gaining trophies in the under-17 bo
ys' 3000m, while the former also goes for the 1500m title.
Shaun Barras and Marc Newby, from the Jarrow club, contest the under-17 boys' 800m and 1500m, while Victoria Addison and Katherine Bulmer look for honours in the under-17 girls' 800m, shot and long jump.
Josh Abladey and his sister Janet should be prominent in the under-20 sprints, with the latter attempting a treble in the 100, 200 and 300m races.
James Lovatt eyes a double in the under-17 boys 100 and 200m, while James Andrew takes in the same distances in the under-20 section.
Shields's Sara Todd could again collect several medals in the senior women's 100, 200, 400m hurdles and long jump.
Laura Watt and Michelle Bratton, from the South Shields club, have prospects in the senior women's 100m hurdles and high jump, while
Michael Briggs tackles the senior men's long jump.
Abigail Smith, from Shields, and the Jarrow pair Katie Corner and Natasha Teasdale go for the under-15 girls' high jump and 75m hurdles.
Deacon's star, junior international Ritchie Kilty, will be favourite to retain the under-20 men's 100 and 200m titles, with Lauren Arthur also aiming to defend her crowns in the senior women's sprints.
Action starts at 10am on Saturday and Sunday.
Luke Clark, from the minor boys section, held off a strong challenge from Chris Warnock with veteran Tom Copp third in South Shields Harriers' sixth and final yacht handicap race of the winter series.
Greg Ritchie, 16, progressed through the field up to seventh recording the fastest time with an excellent 13:54 for the 2.75-mile Bents Park course.
Warnock finished champion with the best aggregate of points in the four from six competition finishing nine ahead of Clark with Jamie scorer in third.
Jade Maddison prevailed from Aidan Horsley and Silas Nichols in the junior event of 1.25 miles. Jamie Scorer in fifth finished only one point clear of Mark Bunn with Carl Buckingham in third, while Megan Brown was girls' champion – five points ahead of Jennifer Bunn.
