DANNY Guthrie told of his relief after Newcastle United booked their place in the third round of the Carling Cup.
Guthrie and his team-mates played Coventry City off the park in the first-half at the Ricoh Arena.

But Clinton Morrison's stoppage time goal gave Chris Coleman's side - who had been two goals down - hope going into the second half.

And Scott Dann's dramatic equaliser four minutes into stoppage time sent the game into extra-time.

Guthrie, 21, admits Coventry should have been dead and buried given the chances created by Kevin Keegan's side, especially before the break.

It was left to substitute Michael Owen - who had come off the bench to score the only goal of the game against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday - to save United's blushes for the second time with a 97th-minute winner.

"We made it a bit difficult for ourselves," Guthrie told the Gazette.

"We got into a good lead, and were playing really well, but the goal before half time rocked us a little bit.

"In the first-half we really played well. We passed the ball well, and got into a good lead, so it was disappointing to concede that goal.

"We were pegged back again, and before extra-time the gaffer just said it would be easy for us to just lie down and let them get on top of us.

"He said he had to get out there and start again, and that's what we did.

"They battled really well, but we were just too strong in the end. Thankfully, we got there in the end.

"We've got players who can hurt teams, and it showed.

"We could have done without the extra time, but these things happen.

"We've got a few days to get ready for the trip to Arsenal, and we'll be ready by then."
