Horden bowled over by Marsden
MARSDEN entertained Horden on Saturday for what turned out to be an enthralling yet low-scoring encounter at the Jack Clark Park.
Captain Chris Mann was dealt a blow in his selection when batsmen Brett Horgan was injured in the cup tie against Whitburn on Friday.
Horgan, who could be missing for the majority of the season, was replaced by veteran George Craig.
Horden won the toss and put the home side into bat on a slow pitch.
The Durham side bowled with good discipline and accuracy, and got an early breakthrough when Mann was trapped lbw off Atherton.
Conor Elliott joined opener Nicholas Quinn and the under-18 pair put on 28 before Elliott departed.
Andrew Robson joined the fray against his old side but soon became the first of Burkes's four victims.
Only two runs had been added before Quinn became his second victim.
Mark Scott and Paul Hobson tried to steady the ship, but Hobson then departed in strange fashion, deflecting the ball off the wicketkeeper and allowing McCoy to take the catch in the slips. This left Marsden on 57-5.
Scott was joined by Ditchburn and the pair moved the score along to 78 before spinner Dixon took three quick wickets to leave Marsden on 80-8.
Craig and 17-year-old Anthony Sawyers then put on a vital 20 runs before Craig became Burkes' fourth scalp – the spinner finishing with 4-26.
After Bradley Skinner had tried in vain, Stobbart came in, but Sawyers was then bowled as Marsden were all out for just 100.
Yet again Marsden had failed to put together any decent partnerships with only three batsmen reaching double figures. However, this was down to disciplined bowling rather than rash shots.
With such a low total, early breakthroughs were crucial, especially with Adrian Hedley in good form.
Robson and Stobbart opened the bowling knowing that if they bowled in the right areas, they would be rewarded on a pitch that was slow but allowing the ball to seam.
However, due to Marsden's low total, Horden opening pair Hedley and Michael Walker would have 50 overs to gain the victory.
Marsden got the good start they wanted with Walker succumbing to Robson for four, caught by Mann.
Horden's shaky start worsened as Minnis was caught behind off Stobbart with Quinn taking a sharp catch.
Marsden then started to dream of an astonishing turnaround as Robson had Hedley caught by Elliott.
Events became more intriguing as Robson produced a beauty to immediately dismiss Mole, and was on a hat-trick, although this did not materialise.
Stobbart backed up Robson by removing Dixon and Horden were in dire straits at 20-5.
When Stanton was brilliantly caught by Hobson off the bowling of Stobbart, an incredible victory was edging closer for the home side with Horden on 26-6.
However, with the powerful McCoy now at the crease, Horden still had hope, and he started positively before Stobbart made him his fourth victim by bowling him to leave victory now completely in Marsden's hands.
Robson's brilliant spell continued as the stubborn Atherton was thwarted by the superb agility of Hobson, taking his second stunning catch of the game.
At 36-8 Brett and Burkes decided to try to hit their way out of trouble, but after a few aggressive strokes Robson had Brett caught by Skinner.
Mann then replaced Stobbart with Ditchburn who saw Horden off in the 24th over by claiming the wicket of Burkes.
He chipped the ball to youngster Sawyers who kept his composure brilliantly to take the match-winning catch as Horden were all out for 64.
This capped an amazing reversal, with Marsden seemingly dead and buried at the halfway stage.
A superb bowling and fielding display had saved Marsden, with Robson taking an excellent 5-23 off his 12 overs, and Stobbart taking 4-31 off his 10.
The 34-run victory saw Marsden claim 25 points to Horden's five.
Marsden CC First XI 100 all out (Quinn 22, Scott 20; Burkes 4-26, A Dixon 3-18).
Horden CC First XI 64 all out (Robson 5-23, Stobbart 4-31, Ditchburn 1-7).
