SOUTH Shields boss Gary Steadman admits the challenge of establishing the club in Division One of the Northern League excites him.
Steadman guided the Mariners to promotion back in April after eight seasons in Division Two.
Shields have been handed a home game for their first fixture of the season, with Ashington the visitors to Filtrona Park.
And while Steadman recognises that the step up in standard will be a tough test for his players, it is one he – and the whole squad – are relishing.
He said: "I'm looking forward to the test, looking forward to the challenge.
"I'm expecting the first 10 or 12 games to be like cup finals for the players.
"The lads have to raise their games and show they have the ability to play at this level."
Steadman goes into the opening game with the majority of the promotion-winning squad, and he feels they have what it takes to step up to first division football.
He added: "Scroggs (Lee Paul Scroggins) will thrive in Division One, as will the likes of Johnners (Mark Johnson) and Fitzy (Simon Fitzpatrick) I think. They'll raise their game.
"At the back we've got Duncan O'Brien, who has played at a good level, and who I have no worries about.
"His experience will be vital. Duncan is more of a leader through how he goes about his business in training and in games, rather than through shouting and bawling."
Steadman has moved to add to his squad by bringing in players with a little bit of top-flight experience, which he hopes will help his side adapt to the pace and rigours of Division One football.
Right-back Karl Jarvis has signed from Spennymoor, while former Ashington and Dunston Fed goalkeeper Andy Clark could start the season between the posts.
Left-sided player Richard Addison – who counts Blyth Spartans among his former clubs – has been training with the club, while Kyle Pendergood has moved from neighbours Jarrow Roofing.
However, the defender is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after fracturing his hip on holiday, and joins Chris Feasey – who could miss the first two months of the season with shin splints – on the injury list.
Midfielder Simon Fitzpatrick could also miss the game tomorrow with a bad back, but Steadman is still looking forward to the visit of Ashington.
He added: "They bring one of the biggest followings, and with it being the first game of the season, hopefully we'll have a big crowd."
