SOUTH Shields are in FA Vase action tomorrow, travelling to fellow Division One side Chester-le-Street.
The Mariners also crashed out of the FA Cup, beaten 4-0 at home by Selby Town at the weekend, and boss Gary Steadman is hoping for an improvement.

Shields restored some pride on Tuesday night when they went down to a battling 1-0 league defeat at Whitley Bay.

Steadman said: "We played really well against Bay, despite having eight players out.

"Everyone performed poorly on Saturday, but Tuesday was a completely different effort.

"If they had put in a quarter of the effort on Saturday that they showed on Tuesday then we could have got something out of the game.

"After the disappointing way we went out of the FA Cup, we want a good FA Vase run."

Steadman welcomes back Duncan O'Brien, David Scorer, Mark Brocklehurst, Graham Irvine and Craig Russell for tomorrow's game, while former Chester-le-Street striker Jonny Wightman may be available to face his former team, depending on his cricket commitments.

Steadman added: "Jonny played the last 25 minutes on Tuesday, and to be fair he looked quite sharp, despite not having a pre-season."
