SHAY Given looked back on Newcastle United's remarkable Carling Cup win over Coventry City, and said: "You couldn't make it up."
Having raced to a 2-0 lead, Kevin Keegan's side were twice pegged back by injury time goals at the end of each half.

It took an extra-time strike from Michael Owen, who had come off the bench with 15 minutes of normal time left, to book Newcastle's place in the third round.

For much of the game Given was a virtual spectator, with United having battered their hosts.

And after the match the goalkeeper told of his frustration at having to pick the ball out of his net twice in a game his team-mates had so convincingly dominated.

His Republic of Ireland colleague Clinton Morrison and Coventry captain Scott Dann both scored for Chris Coleman's side.

Morrison struck a superb goal in first-half injury time after the ball broke to him outside the box, and Dann got on the end of Aron Gunnarsson's long throw four minutes into second-half stoppage time.

"We should have had Coventry dead and buried in the first 90 minutes," said Given.

"For most of that time, I was virtually a spectator, and all I could keep on thinking was that I hoped we weren't going to rue all our missed chances.

"In a way we did, because they took the game into extra time, but in the end, we were OK.

"Coventry scored a late goal in the first half, a late goal at the end of the season half, and very nearly grabbed a late goal at the end of the first period of extra-time when they hit the crossbar.

"Really, you couldn't make it up, and we were very disappointed with the two goals they did score.

"That goal just before half-time from Clinton Morrison gave them a lift, and the throw-in for their second goal came in like a missile, and we struggled to cope with it."

Given was grateful to Owen - who had marked his comeback against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday with a goal - for sparing him the ordeal of penalties.

He added: "When extra-time gets underway, you start thinking about penalties, and what a nightmare they would have been.

"But at the end of the day, we're just happy to be in the next round, and that's the most important thing."
