KEVIN Keegan is hoping for another transfer breakthrough before he takes his Newcastle United team on tour to Mallorca.
Newcastle continue to be linked with midfielders and strikers, with Celtic's Aiden McGeady having again been mentioned.

One report today suggested United will offer Charles N'Zogbia and £5m for the winger, who signed a new five-year deal at Parkhead this month.

However, Keegan went on record after Saturday's friendly win over Hartlepool United to say N'Zogbia – who had been heavily tipped for a summer exit after making it known he was unhappy at the club – would be staying at St James's Park.

In any case, the 57-year-old's immediate priority is to strengthen his back four, and he is targeting a left-back and central defender.

And Keegan hopes to have at least one more player through the door before he takes his side to Spain next week for the Mallorca Summer Cup, which will see Newcastle take on Hertha Berlin and Real Mallorca.

He is looking for someone to compete with Jose Enrique for the left-back spot, as well as another centre-half, with Steven Taylor,

Abdoulaye Faye and Cacapa his only options after the summer departure of Peter Ramage to Queens Park Rangers.

Ideally, Keegan would also like someone to act as cover for Habib Beye, the club's only specialist senior right-back.

He let injury-plagued Stephen Carr – still without a new club – go at the end of the season.
