Charmaine steps up for great win

DESPITE still qualifying for the under-15 girls' section, Charmaine Porter stepped up to the under-17 race in Elswick Harriers' One North East Good Friday Races.

The move up in age group certainly didn't hinder her, as she stormed to an emphatic victory.

Over an amended course, due to flooding on some of the riverside paths, the talented youngster forged clear of Blaydon's Rebecca Oram recording 14.28 for the 2.5 miles.

Former Jarrow Harrier Lawrence McCourt, now at Gateshead, finished second in the under-17 boys' 2.5 miles event, 10 seconds behind his team-mate Chris Johnson in 12.16.

Shaun Barrass was third in 12.20, with George Lowry fourth in 12.39, and Matthew Fearn sixth with 12.52 as Jarrow and Hebburn AC finished second team only three points behind Gateshead.

Oliver Quinn was seventh in the under-15 boys' race of 2.5 miles in 13.40, with Anthony Booth 10th in 14.01, and Daniel Sandbach 15th in 14.23 as Jarrow were again second team five points down on Blyth.

David Wakefield, from South Shields Harriers, finished 12th in 14.07, with Michael Todd 18th in 15.09, with Johnny Nisbit, of Morpeth, first in 12.41.

Jarrow were a prominent sixth from 31 teams in the senior men's 4x 2.5 miles relay.

Greg Ritchie clocked 12.21 on the opening leg in sixth, and Graeme Taylor, with the second fastest stage of 11.59, moved the team into fourth.

Andrew Leese was in sixth with 13.47 on the third leg, and Liam Johnston held on to this high position with 12.12 on the anchor stage.

Luke Adams survived a heavy fall turning into the final half mile, but still fought back to finish eighth for the Shields club in 12.41.

Paul Bainbridge was 10th in 13.23, while Chris Muir improved a place in 12.47 with Harry Harland holding on to ninth position with 14.15.

Phil Slater 16.44, Neil Yorston 17.43, Craig Errington 19.32, and Ian Slater with 16.30 finished 27th for the Shields B team.

Arthur handed over fourth for Shields in the veterans' relay in 13.13. Mike Jones was fifth with 13.33. Kevin Ayres recorded 14.38 and Peter Walker 15.49 as the team finished ninth.

South Tyneside's Angela Hunter, running for Chester-le-Street, was fourth in the senior women's 2.5 miles race in 13:51.

Linda Bone was 22nd in 18.25, with Elaine Elliott 25th in 21.05 for the Shields Club.

Jarrow's Thomas Coyne finished seventh with 9.58 in the under-13 boys' race of 1.8 miles. Charlie Wynn-Davison was 17th in 10.44 with Shields's Mark Minns 30th in 13.02.

Michelle Evans was eighth in the under-13 girls' 1.8miles race in 11.58.
