Defeat heightens Hebburn's relegation fears
HEBBURN TOWN slipped to defeat against the Northern League Division Two's bottom side Birtley Town.
Boss Rob Marsden had hoped his third-bottom side would build on their win over Darlington RA, but they were beaten 2-0.
There was something of a derby feeling about the game, with Birtley including nine former Hebburn players in their line-up.
But it was one who got away, former South Shields and Boldon striker Mark Johnson, who Hebburn tried to sign in the past, who proved the matchwinner.
The first half was a goalless affair, with Hebburn in particular missing a raft of chances.
And five minutes after the break, they were made to pay as the home side counter-attacked, and three passes ended with former Hebburn player Owen Peterson – Birtley's captain – prodding home to give the home side the lead.
Hebburn went looking for an equaliser, and felt aggrieved on two occasions not to be awarded a penalty.
But with five minutes remaining Birtley sealed their win, as striker Johnson broke through unchallenged, drew keeper Kevin Duncan, and slotted home.
