Depleted Roofing suffer a thumping

JARROW Roofing suffered a disastrous defeat as they went down 5-2 at home to promotion rivals Guisborough at the weekend.

With Roofing struggling for numbers, especially defensively, it was always going to be a tough afternoon.

Guisborough soon showed why they are still in the promotion race, and they took the lead on six minutes when Harrison Davies showed stand-in right-back Kevin Davison a clean pair of heels, and his cross was eventually came to Chris I'Anson, who turned and rifled past the helpless Andy Hunter.

Shaun Reay came close to an equaliser before Simon Corbett denied Craig Price as Roofing threatened again.

But it was the Roofers that went further behind on 30 minutes.

Hunter punched a corner clear to just outside the area, where Davies headed over the crowded goalmouth and in off the underside of the bar.

It was 3-0 three minutes later when Davies left Davison in his wake as he raced towards the penalty area and smashed home a rising shot.

Davies then became the provider when again he left Davison for dead and drove a shot goalwards that Hunter parried away to his left, only for Michael Roberts to score the goal of the game with a volley.

Roofing reorganised the defence after the interval, and it began to pay off as they restricted the Guisborough forwards and began to create some chances of their own again.

On the hour, Tony Thirkell raced clear of two defenders and clipped a great goal over Corbett to reduce the arrears.

Craig Nelson was brought on to add further strength to the defence, and when he won a free-kick on the edge of the box, Price curled a shot around the wall that Corbett fumbled for Reay to further reduce the arrears.

But with Roofing pressing, they left gaps at the back, and a goalmouth scramble ended with Hunter and Ian Dixon contriving to knock the ball into their own net to give Guisborough the win.
