Entries flood in for Sand Dancer race
SOUTH Shields Harriers' Sand Dancer 10km Multi Terrain Race, on April 11, is again proving highly popular, with more than 100 entries already received.
Generous sponsorship from the Sand Dancer pub, and Arndale Sports and Nutrients, has provided an extensive prize list for senior and veteran men and women.
The North Eastern Veterans' Championships is incorporated in the event, with medals in various categories.
The race covers two laps of the Leas over paths and country, starting on the promenade near Trow Rocks and finishing on the track in Gypsies Green Stadium.
Entry costs 6 for club runners and 8 for unattached athletes, and entries should be sent to R Shaw, 7 Burnside, East Boldon, Tyne & Wear, NE36, OLS. Telephone 536 2674. Cheques should be made payable to South Shields Harriers AC.
The North Eastern Counties AA's Road Relay Championships will be held for the first time at Hetton Lyons Country Park on Sunday at 1pm.
The event was held successfully for more than 40 years at the Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, but the increasing volume of traffic meant switches to Saltwell Park, Watergate Park in the past, and now Herrington.
Morpeth, Gosforth and New Marske should be in contention, while Sunderland are still missing some of their best athletes.
Hebburn's Damien Western is included in the provisional team of six for the Wearsiders.
South Tyneside's Claire Simpson and Angela Hunter are on the Chester-le-Street list, from which teams of four will be selected to defend their title.
Lucy Turner, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, finished ninth in the pole vault in the AAA Under-20, 17 and 15 Indoor Championships at Birmingham.
Turner reached 2.30m in a pool of 46 for the under-15 girls' final, with Wakefield's Abigalil Roberts soaring to gold with 2.90m.
Kerry Maguire, from Shields and competing for Gateshead, finished 13th with 2.60m in the under-17 girls' pole vault.
Turner also qualified for the semi-finals of the 60m hurdles, but was eighth with 9.97, missing the final.
Mia Hodgson, from Peter Tate's Monkton Stadium Combined Events Squad, won her heat in 9.52, but despite clocking 9.43 in her semi-final, also missed out on the final.
Jarrow's Abigail Smith was third in her heat of the under-17 girls 60m hurdles in 9.34, but went out in the semi-final. Katie Corner was seventh in the heats in 9.76.
Ashleigh Wood, a former member of the Shields club, reached the final of the under-20 women's 60m hurdles missing out on the bronze medal with a time of 8.83.
Jarrow's Charlotte Pepper qualified for the under-17 girls' 60m hurdles semi-finals finishing sixth in 8.29. Lucy Mulvain qualified for the 60m semi-finals in the under-17 section, going out with 8.38.
Hodgson recorded 8.40 to reach the 60m semi-finals, but was sixth in 8.33 to miss the final.
