Fresh injury blow for Newcastle ahead of Euro run-in

BLOW ... Slovenia's Under-21 coach says Haris Vuckic won't play again this season.

BLOW ... Slovenia's Under-21 coach says Haris Vuckic won't play again this season.

HARIS Vuckic has been ruled out of the rest of the season, according to Slovenia’s Under-21 coach Tomaz Kavcic.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew last revealed Vuckic has suffered a “knock” which would keep him out of the club’s Easter fixtures.

However, it seems Vuckic’s knee problem is more serious than first thought.

“I can confirm that Vukic is out for the season – he injured his knee,” said Kavcic, who has been forced to rule him out of an international next month.

“What can we do? Nothing, we will have to find a replacement for him.

But of course it won’t be easy, he is a great player, and a leader of our team.”

Pardew had blocked an extended spell for Vuckic at Cardiff City, where he spent a month on loan, because of a number of other injury concerns.

Malky Mackay wanted to keep him at the Championship club, but when he was asked about an extension, Pardew said: “No chance – not with the injuries we’ve got.”

And Vuckic – who impressed in pre-season – was put straight back into United’s first-team squad.
