Hebburn give Boldon Colts the Blues
BOLDON Colts took on Hebburn Town Blues in one of the ties of the round in the La Liga Division 1 Cup. .
The very muddy conditions made it difficult for both the top sides to play their flowing football.
Hebburn started the stronger, creating a couple of half chances, but Boldon looked dangerous on the break in what was a fairly even game.
With goals hard to come by, it was Hebburn who looked to break the deadlock when they were awarded a penalty, but Boldon's keeper pulled off a terrific save to keep his side in the tie.
And within seconds the ball was played upfield and an anxious tackle in the box by a Blues defender resulted in another spot kick, this time to the Colts, which once more was terrifically saved by Hebburn's keeper to ensure the scores remained level at the interval.
In the second period, both sides went for the win in a cracking match, and it was the Blues who secured the tie when Hudson superbly fired home to put his team through to the quarter-finals.
Both sides were a credit to the league and their managers for a game played in good spirit.
In a nail-biting game which could have gone either way, the Gladiators went two down against Consett Terrors after a couple of great strikes from Tipping and Clish.
In the second half, the Shields outfit responded well and two brilliant efforts from Wanless put his side level 2-2 with all to play for.
And with the Gladiators having the bit between their teeth, they really fancied the tie until Wilson popped up with a last-gasp winner for the Durham side to send them through.
In another close tie, Jarrow FC Cheetahs took on neighbours Whiteleas Galaxy, and in a well contested match, it was the Cheetahs who came out on top 2-1, thanks to strikes from Bowie and Harris, with Smeatham replying in style for the Leas.
In a derby clash, Wrekenton Nou Camp came out on top against Gateshead FC with an impressive 4-0 scoreline.
On the mark for their side were Fox (2), Charlton and Maddison to cap a fine team performance.
In another cracking tie between two of the bottom sides, Reyrolle and Sheriff Hill Reds, the Hebburn team who did most of the pressing, and were rewarded with a fine goal from Richardson.
Sheriff Hill, to their credit, kept on battling and were unlucky with a couple of great efforts.
But Reyrolle were close to making it two when Poppett fired in a brilliant strike which came back off the bar, as his side went on to claim the victory.
