Jarrow Roofing have announced their first new signing of the summer with the arrival of midfielder Calvin Smith from fellow Northern League Division One side Consett.

The 28-year-old lists Sunderland, Dunston UTS, Blyth Spartans and Spennymoor Town among his former clubs, and arrives at the Boldon C.A. Sports Ground after helping the Steelmen record a seventh-place finish in the league last season – chipping in with six goals.

And after a productive spell in County Durham, Smith admits he’s feeling excited by the new challenge that awaits him on South Tyneside.

“I really enjoyed my time at Consett. It was a great achievement to finish so high up in the league, but I felt it was time to move on and look ahead to a new challenge.

“I know Roofing found it tough last season, but you can see there is a real ambition about the place to be competing at the top end of the league on a consistent basis.

“Everyone is determined to hit the ground running next season and I’m looking forward to playing a role in the club’s progression.”

Smith will be linking up with former Consett team-mate Michael Mackay when the season begins, and the playmaker thinks that the two can strike up a prolific partnership once again that will put Richie McLoughlin’s side in the hunt for silverware during the new campaign.

“I played alongside Michael for three seasons at Consett, helping him to score over 40 goals.

“I am the type of midfielder who likes to dictate the play, delivering key passes for the strikers to convert.

“There is a huge amount of attacking talent at the Roofing. The likes of Paul Chow and Mackay have been really prolific, so I hope to provide them with the ammunition they need in order to have another great season.

“I’ve heard some great things about the club from the players who are already there, and the ones that I have spoken to believe the team is only one or two quality additions away from mounting a challenge. This ambition is something that excites me, so I just can’t wait to get started now.”

The Roofers have also confirmed their pre-season calendar. After returning to training at the end of June, the Roofers will face Billingham Synthonia at the second division club’s Central Avenue home on Saturday, July 7.

The following Thursday brings a trip to Cullercoats where Roofing face off against their former co-manager, and ex-Hebburn Town boss, Paul Bennett who has taken over at the Northern Alliance club.

On Thursday, July 21, Roofing travel to another second division club as Willington provide the opposition before a South Tyneside clash against Jarrow at Perth Green on Monday, July 25.

The pre-season comes to an end with trips to Wearside League team Redcar Athletic on Wednesday, July 27, and Northern League Division Two new boys Stockton Town on Wednesday, August 3.
