Achraf Lazaar has travelled to Italy as he edges closer to a move away from Newcastle United.

The defender, signed from Palermo last summer, has been told to find a new club by Rafa Benitez.

And Gazzetta dello Sport reported this week that there have been discussions with Genoa over a loan move to the Serie A side.

Lazaar today posted a photograph on Instagram of himself with his representatives in Milan.

The 25-year-old said: "Working with my agents andrea_cattoli pintoadrianoferreira @ Milan, Italy."

Lazaar – who posted a cryptic message on the social media site last month – has been training at the club's Academy in pre-season.

Benitez explained his decision to sideline Lazaar, Tim Krul and Emmanuel Riviere last month.

“When you have too many players, what you can do is talk with them straight, and that’s what I did," said Benitez.

“I told them ‘listen, we have too many players – my idea is this one’. We have to be sure that they understand what we want to do.

“You cannot be Championship or Premier League when you don’t have all the squad, all the players, that you want, because we are going a little bit late.

“You have to maximise the time that you have with your players.

“If someone has to stay at the Academy, they have to understand that it’s not personal, it’s professional.”

Lazaar has four years left on his United deal.

The Morocco international spoke to the Gazette about his future in May.

“I’m here to play," said Lazaar. "I didn’t do it too much this year. But I think the next year, I play (more). I need to speak to the team about the future.”

Benitez again stressed the importance of moving players out of the club at a press conference yesterday.

“We have a lot of players to move out before we can move (players) in," said Benitez, whose side take on Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium tomorrow.
