Alan Shearer on Newcastle, Man United, his manager ambitions and why Wayne Rooney should be dropped by England

Rooney has been left out of Manchester United's last couple of games as he struggles to find his best form.

And Shearer says caretaker manager Gareth Southgate should leave the forward out of his starting XI tomorrow.

He said: "I think we made the same mistake in the Euros of taking and playing players who are not in form.

"Wayne wasn't playing well, he has been left out (by Man United) and if it was up to me I don't see how the manager can play him tomorrow.

"I still think he'll come back as he's still got a lot to offer but at this moment in time there are players who are in form and playing well who I think should be playing ahead of him."

And on Jose Mourinho's start at Manchester United, Shearer added: "I would thin k he would have expected a little bit more. He was very content with the players that he brought in and they spent an absolute fortune again, so I think they've been pretty disappointing up to now and they have got a lot of improving to do."

Shearer was speaking to Talksport ahead of his charity game on Sunday where he will manage a Newcastle XI against a Manchester United Select side to mark 20 years since the famous 5-0 clash between the two teams (kick-off 1.30pm at Kingston Park).

But the Match of the Day pundit says he doesn't have any managerial ambitions of his own any longer.

"I'm very, very happy in what I'm doing," he added. "I made a conscious decision a few years ago to stick at the media and work at it. I'm quite content and happy with what I'm doing."

Shearer had a spell as Newcastle manager, but was unable to stop them from dropping into the Championship. It's a similar situation to Rafa Benitez's time last season, but Shearer believes the Spaniard can get Newcastle back to their glory days if Mike Ashley continues to let him manage the club the way he wants.

"What the early games tell people is that Newcastle aren't going to walk the Championship," Shearer said. "It's a long hard slog in that league.

"But the big thing coming out of Newcastle eventually, and I hope it stays that way, is that Rafa is running the club.

"He's doing it his way, he's able to bring players in that he wants to bring in not who the chief scout or the owners wants to bring in, and if that's going to happen and stay that way then they'll have a big chance of getting back up - and not only that, but having success in years to come."
