SHOLA Ameobi could be set for a shock reunion with Newcastle United – after being targeted by Sydney FC.
The striker confirmed last week that he would be leaving Newcastle this summer after his contract with the Magpies expired.
Hull City are keen to keep Ameobi in the Premier League, but Australian outfit Sydney have also made enquiries about the 32-year-old.
And with Newcastle facing the A League side in a pre-season friendly in New Zealand next month, it could see Ameobi facing up against his old team-mates.
A spokesman for Sydney confirmed they were in talks with Ameobi’s representatives as they look to make the Nigeria international their stellar summer signing.
Sydney have struggled in the A League since winning the title in 2009, and want Ameobi to replace Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero.
Ameobi is believed to have considered ending his career abroad in the past, although it would mean uprooting his family to the other side of the world.
The Nigerian-born frontman made more than 300 appearances for Newcastle in a 14-year stint at the club, with the only other team he played for being Stoke City in a loan spell back in 2009.
Ameobi will wait until after the World Cup before making a decision on his future.
He was last night waiting to hear if he had been included in Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the tournament, with coach Stephen Keshi ready to tell the players who had survived the cut after training.
Last week, Ameobi told the Gazette of his excitement at the prospect of playing in a World Cup in the twilight of his career.
“I never thought this would ever happen,” he said.
