Cisse’s goal was Shear class

STUNNER ... Papiss Demba Cisse celebrates after scoring a wonder goal.

  • by MILES STARFORTH

PAPISS Demba Cisse says he’ll never achieve the legendary status of Alan Shearer – but the striker’s determined to do the No9 jersey proud.

Cisse scored a superb goal in yesterday’s 4-2 win over Southampton.

The 27-year-old beat goalkeeper Artur Boruc with a first-time shot from 30 yards after a ball from goalkeeper Rob Elliott dropped for him.

Cisse’s goal brought back memories of a stunning goal against Everton from all-time leading scorer Alan Shearer during his long and distinguised Newcastle career.

However, Cisse shrugged off the plaudits that came his way after the result, which saw United – who qualified for the Europa League’s Round of 16 last week – climb into 14th place in the Premier League.

“I saw the ball come over Jonas (Gutierrez), and I went to play for the second ball,” Cisse told the Gazette. “After the ball came to me in my head I just thought to shoot.

“I knew it was a goal. It was a nice feeling – I’m happy.

“I’m a Muslim and I said ‘thank God’ once it had left my boot and went in.

“The main thing was it helped to get three points – that was the most important thing.

“It’s very important for the team. I scored and Newcastle took three points. It’s a great day for us.

“We go higher (up the table) now. There are teams within one or two points. It has been a good week.”

The strike – Cisse’s eighth of the campaign – is a contender for goal of the season, but the Senegal international feels his wonder strike in Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season was better.

“The Chelsea goal is at the top of my list,” said Cisse. “But this one is up there too.

“It’s a very difficult goal for me to score. A few people could score a goal like this, but Chelsea was very difficult to do.”

Cisse – who has watched some of Shearer’s goals on TV – says he has great respect for the former England international, now a pundit on Match of the Day.

“I have seen Alan Shearer’s goal against Everton on TV,” said Cisse.

“Alan Shearer is the big man. I’m not Alan, I try sometimes.

“Alan is the big man. I have never met him, but all of the time I see him in on TV.

“He talks well about me when I play good.”
