Diego Maradona questions Rafa Benitez's appointment at Newcastle after 'failure' in Spain

Diego Maradona has spoken about Rafa Benitez's appointment at Newcastle United.

The Argentina legend has questioned the move given that he "failed" at former club Real Madrid.

Benitez's contract at the Bernabeu was terminated in January. He joined Newcastle in March after the dismissal of Steve McClaren.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, Maradona said: "If Benitez, whom I respect very much, was bad in Madrid, let him tell me it was for a lack of players!

"No, he failed. But after a while, after failing there, they give him three years in Newcastle.

"Can someone explain it to me? Is that normal or does something go wrong?”

Maradona spent seven years of his playing career at Italian club Napoli, where Benitez had a two-year spell as manager before moving to Real.
