JOEY Barton and David Ginola are the latest names to have been confirmed for Steve Harper’s charity game between Newcastle United and AC Milan.
The Steve Harper 20 Years Charity Match takes place next Wednesday at St James’s Park, and a host of star names had already been announced for both sides.
Alan Shearer, Shay Given, Rob Lee, Les Ferdinand and Tino Asprilla are among the ex-Newcastle players taking part, while Franco Baresi, Paulo Maldini, Christian Vieri and Mark van Bommel will line up for Milan Glorie.
Birmingham City boss Lee Clark is also in United’s squad, as well as Peter Beardsley and Nolberto Solano, so it looks all set to be an exciting night of football on Tyneside.
A number of interesting scenarios have been thrown up, including the prospect of Barton and Shearer, as well as Shearer and Keith Gillespie, lining up for the same team after their public spats over the years.
Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer will also be Newcastle team-mates again for one night only, eight years since their on-pitch brawl led to both men being sent off against Aston Villa.
It will be interesting to see the reaction Andy Cole gets from the Tyneside public following his controversial move to Manchester United in 1995.
Barton is among the most eye-catching names to have been confirmed in the squad, and says he is “honoured” to have been asked.
He said: “When I was asked to go back up and be part of this game, I was honoured.
“It’ll be a great night against an AC Milan legends side which includes some of my heroes when I was growing up.
“It will be the first time I’ve been back to play an actual game at St James’s Park.
“I’ve been back with QPR, but I was suspended, so it’ll be nice to go back and get a run-out on my old stomping ground; a place where I have really fond memories.
“It’s supporting a great guy and doing well for local charities. It should be a great occasion and I hope the fans turn up in great numbers.”
