Newcastle United Under-23s ensured a third-place finish in Premier League 2’s Division 2 with a 2-0 win at Middlesbrough tonight.

Tom Heardman gave the young Magpies the lead just before the half hour at the Riverside Stadium, in their final match of the league campaign.

Daniel Barlaser’s free-kick caused problems for Boro keeper Zak Hemming and the alert Heardman forced the loose ball over the line.

Ten minutes later, Newcastle made it 2-0 as Adam Wilson fired home after Heardman had a header well saved by Hemming.

Boro tried to get back into the game, but Alex Pattison was denied a reply in the 73rd minute when Owen Bailey blocked his effort on the line.

Boro had Callum Johnson sent off for a late challenge in the dying moments.

Newcastle end on 37 points from 22 games, while Boro are third-bottom on 21 and could drop to second-bottom.
