LIVERPOOL, Arsenal, Newcastle, Sunderland, Man City and Man United were the main clubs in the transfer headlines today.

Newcastle’s pursuit of Emmanuele Riviere has been attracting headlines across the country, while on the Sunderland front, the main line has been Connor Wickham turning down a new contract.

The biggest transfer of the day, however, was Liverpool’s signing of Serbia winger Lazar Markovic from Benfica.

The 20-year-old has joined for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £20m, on what the Barclays Premier League club describe as a “long-term deal”.

Markovic is Liverpool’s fourth new recruit of the summer, following the arrivals of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can.

He said: “I am very happy that I have joined such a great club.”
