Lovenkrands injury could spell end of his Newcastle career

INJURY BLOW ... Peter Lovenkrands.

INJURY BLOW ... Peter Lovenkrands.

NEWCASTLE United striker Peter Lovenkrands could have kicked his last ball for the club.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew today confirmed the Denmark international, whose contract expires in the summer, may not play again this term because of a thigh problem.

Pardew said: “We have got a bad injury this week – Peter Lovenkrands has really hurt his thigh.

“We are not sure yet, but he’s definitely torn it and he might have ruptured it, so we think that’s him for the season, actually, which is a very big blow for him with his contract up and everything.”

Lovenkrands, who joined the club as a free agent under former boss Chris Hughton after a successful loan spell, has been used sparingly this season, but came on as a substitute in last Sunday’s 1-1 derby draw with Sunderland.

He told the Gazette earlier this week how he hoped to force his way into the United team before the end of the season, and bag his 100th career goal.

Lovenkrands pushes for place – and his century

But with the striker out of contract in the summer, and unlikely to be offered a new deal, it appears his late substitute appearance against Sunderland on Sunday will be his last game for the club.
