Matz Sels has been dropped by Rafa Benitez for tonight's game against Norwich City.

Benitez's ninth-placed side take on Norwich at St James's Park tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

Karl Darlow – who has played in the club's two EFL Cup wins – will make his first Championship start of the season.

Midfielder Jack Colback is recalled to the starting XI in place of Isaac Hayden, who, like Sels, is among the substitutes.

Sels deleted his Twitter account after the weekend's 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, having been abused online by a small number of supporters.

United manager Benitez backed the summer signing ahead of the match in the wake of criticism from some fans.

Some supporters felt Sels, signed from Gent, should have done better for Villa's late equaliser.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Darlow; Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett; Shelvey, Colback; Ritchie, Diame, Gouffran; Gayle. Subs: Sels, Mbemba, Lazaar, Hayden, Atsu, Perez, Mitrovic.

NORWICH CITY: Pinto, Martin, Bassong, Olsson; Tettey, Dorrans; Ja. Murphy, Howson, Brady; Jerome. Subs: Ruddy, Naismith, Oliveira, Hoolahan, Bennett, J Murphy, Thompson.
