Newcastle brilliantly troll EFL Championship over team of the year announcement

Two Newcastle United players have been named in the EFL Championship team of the year, but it is the omission of one other which has raised a few eyebrows.

And the Magpies have not been shy in registering their surprise at the decision.

United top-scorer Dwight Gayle's performances this season have been recognised with a place in the XI, so too has influential midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, but there is no place for Ciaran Clark, without doubt one of the club's stand out players this campaign.

United, via their official Twitter account, replied to the EFL Championship, with a shocked emoji and a picture of Republic of Ireland international Clark, also looking decidedly shocked.

Rafa Benitez signed Clark, currently out with a knee injury, for around £5million in the summer from Aston Villa.

Bizarrely few Villa fans were disappointed to see Clark leave. But he has proved a revelation on Tyneside with his classy displays at the centre of defence, forming a solid partnership with club captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Matt Ritchie can also maybe feel aggrieved that he is not included, having been a driving force for United in recent months.
