Ivan Toney had something to celebrate at the weekend – unlike his Newcastle United team-mates.
The striker helped loan club Barnsley win the Johnstones Paint Trophy at Wembley yesterday.
Toney, signed from Northampton Town last summer, came off the bench and had a hand in his team’s second goal against Oxford United, beaten 3-2 in front of a 59,230 crowd.
Barnsley interim manager Paul Heckingbottom said: “I told the players ‘you’ve got to enjoy this’. That’s what you play for.”
Even the possibility of being named permanent manager did not faze Heckingbottom, whose side sealed their place at Wembley under Lee Johnson, now in charge of Bristol City.
He said: “The club know I’d give everything regardless. The fans know that.”
