Rafa Benitez last night met Mike Ashley for talks over staying on at Newcastle United.

Benitez had discussions with Ashley, the relegated club's owner, after yesterday's 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at St James's Park.

It was the first time Benitez had met Ashley, who hadn't attended a home game all season.

Newcastle's hierarchy want the 56-year-old – who has a clause in his deal allowing him to leave in the wake of relegation – to rebuild the club in Championship.

That sentiment is shared by supporters, who chanted "Rafa Benitez, we want you to stay" throughout the match.

After the match, Benitez revealed how United fans have swayed him towards staying on Tyneside.

Benitez also revealed the mood in the dressing room.

Writer Miles Starforth says the Tottenham result was "embarrassing" – for BOTH clubs.

Meanwhile, Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino had a forgettable afternoon.

The result meant Arsenal climbed above his team and finished runners-up to Premier League champions Leicester City.

And Pochettino branded the day as his "worst as manager".

Finally, one Newcastle player has made Roy Hodgson's provisional England squad for Euro 2016.
