Ian Cathro has opened up about Newcastle United's "painful" relegation.

The coach stayed on under Rafa Benitez after the dismissal of Steve McClaren last season.

And Cathro has given a blunt assessment of the club's campaign.

He said: "We deserved to go down, no doubt about that. We consistently failed."

United manager Rafa Benitez, meanwhile, will today attend the inaugural Newcastle United Foundation 1892 Cup, which is being staged at the club's Academy.

The tournament will feature 128 children from eight schools.

Those taking part will wear Newcastle's new Puma home kit, which was first revealed last week by new signing Dwight Gayle.

Benítez said: "We are very pleased to be hosting this very special tournament, and to bring the community and our young supporters closer to the club. We are all looking forward to it.

"It will be great to see the children proudly wearing our new kit."

Finally, former United striker Nile Ranger is yet to join a new club.
