CHEIK Tiote is out of Newcastle United’s Europa League clash against Benfica on Thursday night.
The midfielder has failed to prove his fitness ahead of Thursday night’s quarter-final first-leg at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.
Tiote suffered a strain in training last week, and wasn’t in the 19-man squad which left for Portugal this afternoon.
However, defender Davide Santon travelled after recovering from the thigh problem which kept him out of Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Manchester City, while goalkeeper Tim Krul, out since February with an ankle injury, could make his comeback against Benfica.
Meanwhile, defender Massadio Haidara (knee and thigh) wasn’t in the squad.
Haidara, like Tiote, could instead return against Fulham at St James’s Park on Sunday.
SQUAD: Ameobi, Anita, Bigirimana, Cabaye, Campbell, Cisse, Elliot, Gosling, Gutierrez, Tim Krul, Marveaux, Obertan, Perch, Santon, Simpson, Sissoko, S Taylor, Williamson, Yanga-Mbiwa.
