Victory Fernandez caught the eye as Newcastle United opened thier Checkatrade Trophy campaign.
Peter Beardsley's side beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 at Gresty Road last night.
And Fernandez, signed in January from Spanish club UE Cornella, set up the only goal, scored by Liam Smith.
The 19-year-old was taken off at the break, having missed most of pre-season because of injury.
Fernandez used his pace early in the game when he troubled the home defence.
Coach Beardsley said: "We hope we've got a good player, but he's still young and he still isn't developed.
"He's a good footballer – technically very good – and delivers good balls and was involved in the first goal, which was a really good goal from our point of view.
"We hope we've got a player, but we don't want to put pressure on him yet.
"The plan was to give him 45 minutes as he hasn't played most of pre-season, because he's been injured.
"Callum Roberts was the same, but I kept him on a bit longer. They want to play."
