SUNDERLAND boss Paolo Di Canio got plenty boos during his appearance at Steve Harper’s testimonial – and was sent crashing to the ground by a Joey Barton tackle.
Di Canio turned out for AC Milan Glorie against Harper’s Newcastle United Legends side at St James’s Park to mark the goalkeeper’s 20 years with the club.
The Italian was jeered throughout the game, with arguably the loudest cheers coming when Barton upended him in the second half.
Barton – now at QPR – had been egged on by Newcastle fans on Twitter all week to foul the Sunderland manager, and duly obliged after his second-half appearance as a substitute.
Di Canio was to have the last laugh, however. After the game ended goalless, Milan won 2-1 on penalties with Di Canio converting his spot kick and Barton having his effort saved.
