Ex-Sunderland star Dean Whitehead believes Huddersfield Town can beat Newcastle United in the race for promotion.

The Terriers are seven points behind Rafa Benitez's Magpies with one game in hand.

And with United having just three games remaining, should Town win their extra second tier game, at Wolves next week, as well as beat Fulham this weekend, they could be just two points back with two to play.

With that in mind veteran midfielder Whitehead says the Huddersfield players have the belief they can chase United down.

"We still believe," said Whitehead.

"We’ve got a strong dressing room, it’s positive and we will fight to the end and see where it takes us.

"We’ll try to win every game that we’ve got left and see if it’s enough.

"Our confidence is high, we haven’t lost any belief at any point in the season and we showed we’ve got spirit and togetherness.

"We have plans and we try to stick to that."
