Quiet deadline day at Newcastle – but Simpson may still leave

WIGAN TARGET ... Newcastle's Danny Simpson.

WIGAN TARGET ... Newcastle's Danny Simpson.

  • by MILES STARFORTH

ALAN Pardew’s ruled out any major transfer deadline day departures from Newcastle United – but Danny Simpson could still leave the club.

Wigan Athletic, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion are keen on signing Simpson, who is out of contract in the summer.

And Newcastle – who signed right-back Mathieu Debuchy earlier this month – are willing to let the 26-year-old leave St James’s Park before the transfer window closes.

However, Pardew doesn’t expect anyone else to follow Demba Ba – who returns to St James’s Park with Chelsea on Saturday – out of the club.

“I was involved in the drama a couple of years ago when Andy (Carroll) left,” said Pardew today.

“But we did our work early, and got the players in we felt we needed.

“There’ll definitely be no-one going out. We had a couple of enquiries, but they were nos.”

Owner Mike Ashley was at United’s training ground today to meet the club’s new signings.

“Mike was here because he wanted to meet the new players and welcome them to the club,” added Pardew.
