Rafa Benitez has explained Newcastle United's decision to loan Florian Thauvin back to Olympique Marseille.
The winger has rejoined his former club on a season-long loan.
And Marseille have an "obligation" to buy the 23-year-old for a fixed fee at the end of the campaign.
Thauvin, signed from the French club a year ago for £12million, quickly became unsettled on Tyneside last season and returned to the Stade Velodrome in January.
United manager Benitez said: “We had an advantage because we know he is a good player – we know about his quality – but I knew what he was thinking.
"He was happy there last year and we had to do it.
"We want the best players he, but we have to be convinced and they have to be convince it is the best for everyone.
"He was training well for us but he wanted to go there. It was the best solution."
